A fine English ivory chess set, attributed to George Merrifield (1819-1852)
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings surmounted with Maltese Crosses, queens with reeded ball tops and plumes, bishops as mitres, knights as horses’ heads, finely carved with flowing manes and flared nostrils, rooks as double stacked turrets with battlements, pawns with ball finials, the king 10.3cm high, the pawn 4.6cm high, in the original mahogany box with shield shaped ivory escutcheon and lift-out fitted trays lined in dark blue velveteen plush, 25cm wide.
