Two Russian Kholomogory Pawns, 18th century

January 15, 2014

Two interesting, and relatively scarce, 18th century pawns from a Russian Kholomogory chess set. These sets were made for export from Russia and carved from walrus ivory. These pawns are wearing turbans and represent the Turkish side. The other side of the chess set would represented the Europeans, most probably in Greek or Roman dress.
