canton-export-gaming-counters-early-mid-19th-century

June 14, 2016

A collection of mother o’ pearl gambling or gaming counters from the Chinese port of Canton. These were made during the early to mid 19th century for export to the West. The Chinese Emperor allowed a limited trade for the European countries, which were allowed to establish trading bases or “Hongs” in a designated area around the harbour at Canton.
