Martin Battersby is known for his work in trompe l'oeil. His career as an artist developed in parallel with other activities and he held his first one man show in 1948 at the Brook Street Gallery, London. Shows on both sides of the Atlantic followed. He became a master of the Trompe l'oeil form and his work often reflected his obsessions with theatrical masks and sphinxes. Recently, The National Trust has shown a small exhibition of his work at Mompesson House, Salisbury. Battersby also painted the trompe l'oeil murals in the drawing room of Lady Diana Cooper's house in Little Venice, London.
