charming-chess-set-box-circa-1800

December 08, 2015

Elegant early player’s chess set dating from the very first years of the 19th century. Although very likely to be English, it shows similarities to the European “Selenus” pattern. Note the classical influence with the urn shaped columns. Attractive polished patina to the bone.

The charming chinoiserie box has a lacquered finish and is decorated with sprays of flowers, leaves and foilage in penwork and a miniature chess board to the sliding lid. The pink paper lining is original and very typical of the Regency period.
