lund-pattern-double-rook-chess-set-circa-1840

December 18, 2015

Unusual antique ivory set in the style of the famous Thomas and William Lund of London. The Lunds were makers of luxury goods, including chess sets and boxes of the highest quality. Thomas Lund died in 1845. Similar sets were also sold by Calvert of Fleet Street, one of the up-market shops that clustered around The Strand area of London; purveyors of luxury goods to the carriage trade.

This particular set features double, stacked rooks- a most unusual feature. Six cannon protrude between the battlements.
