antique-king-george-iii-glass-mezzotint

Increasing rare reverse glass mezzotint of King George III, in the original period frame. From the collection of Harold Ward.

The printed mezzotint was stuck to the reverse of a glass panel with size, and then shaved- or rubbed down- from the back with a rubber, leaving a wafer-thin layer of paper. The print was then hand-coloured from the back, allowing the colours to shine through with a luminous glaze.
