antique-lund-pattern-bone-chess-set-circa-1850

July 08, 2019

Interesting antique bone chess set in the "Lund" or "Calvert" style. Slightly unusual to find one of these sets made from bone, rather than ivory- but means it can be exported legally to the United States.

The Lund family were well-known turners and manufacturers of fancy goods during the Victorian period. Thomas Lund established his business and warehouse at 57 Cornhill, London in 1804, initially selling pens and quills and later, cutlery, writing boxes, dressing cases and other fancy goods including chess sets.

During the mid 19th century sets, unsigned sets were made in a pattern very similar to the sets produced and sold by the Lunds.

The set comes with an antique wooden box with a sliding lid.
