The British Chess Company was founded by William Moffatt and William Hughes in 1891, and for a relatively short period, became the main rival to Jaques. BCC Staunton sets feature knight's horse's heads in Xylonite, an early plastic, enabling sets of a decent quality to be produced without the need for skilled craftsmen.
The British Chess Company stopped trading around 1908. Consequently, BCC sets and boards are rare, and now coveted by keen collectors.
