The “Edinburgh” Upright or “Northern” Upright pattern is one of my favourite chess designs. According to Howard Staunton the design was designed by Lord John Hay during the 1840’s.

This particular set is a lovely example of the type and one of the nicest boxwood Upright sets I have seen for some time. From the collection of a well known British chess collector and expert. Beautiful thing; recommended.
