Fascinating antique Indian figure, beautifully carved from elephant ivory and showing traces of the original green stain. May well have been a chess piece (one side of Indian chess sets were often stained with green vegetable dyes), or otherwise, a decorative ‘toy’ figure. The rider’s helmet is very similar to helmets worn for polo.
