These chess sets were made in Vizagapatam, a region of Eastern India famous for its trade in intricate ivory carvings during the early to mid 19th century. Sets were made primarily for the British export market. Vegetable dyes were used to create the brown stain.

A nice reprensentative set of the style. From the personal collection of chess historian, Gareth Williams.
