japanese-figural-chess-set-1930-39

January 02, 2020

Japanese figural chess sets tend to be much rarer than their Chinese equivalents- I suspect because fewer examples were made. This is an especially interesting set of the type- as it comes with a reputable provenance: we can date its manufacture between 1930 and 39. The original purchaser of the set was a British army officer stationed in the British concession in Tientsin, China.

Takeda Bros. were Japanese importers  'curiousities' and luxury goods, based in Tientsin. The firm was founded in 1916, and became Takeda 'Brothers & Co.' in 1924.
