rajasthan-elephant-chess-queen-circa-1840

Antique elephant howdah queen from a "Rajasthan" chess set. These sets were made in Rajasthan and exported to Britain by the East India Company, which was dissolved in 1874, and its licence to rule India revoked by the Crown in 1858.

The two sides (quite often in red and green) depicted the forces of the British East India Company versus the Princely States. The painted and lacquered finish is typical of Rajasthan.
