Lovely example of an antique ship's, "campaign" or maritime chess set. The chessmen are in the famous Staunton pattern, first patented in 1849, and have pegs to their undersides, which fit into the folding board.

Sets like these would have been made for use aboard ship, or for other forms of travel. The set comes with the board and the original box with a sliding lid.
