Boxwood Side:

Queen coronet with tiny chip to one spike. Neat restoration to crown. Otherwise excellent. Nice shiny 'toffee' patination, green baizes excellent.

Ebony Side:

Tiny chip to bottom of two pawns, very minor hairline crack to rook, knight and pawn (well restored). Otherwise excellent.

Box:

Scuffs, minor dents and wear to box as expected with age. Further inscription and wear to brass inlay. Rubbing and some wear to green label, plus inscription in ink.

Excellent. Green baizes to the underside of the bases ‘excellent’.

Ebony Side:

Excellent. Green baizes excellent.

Box:

Good. The usual minor dings and minor surface scratches as appropriate for its age. Traces of the original white BBC label to the underside of the lid.

Box:

Stain top left to the lid. A few scuffs, silk lining to the underbase slightly rubbed on the corners. Otherwise good. Gilt-tooling good. Interior excellent. 

Counters:

15 wooden counters dark brown. 15 wooden counters in a lighter coloured wood. A few hairline cracks. Counters quite light in weight.

Good. Rolled leather board a bit creased, a few minor scuffs and minor scratches to the leather outer case. 16 + 16 counters, chess one side, backgammon or draughts the other.

Chess Set:

Good. Minor surface scuffs and very minor rubbing to red stain, as consistent with age. Chip to underside of white king base.

Box:

Crack to lid, green baize interior good. No key.

Some rubbing to the surface near one corner. A few minor marks and the inevitable scuffs. Hinges good.

Usual minor nicks and scuffs as expected with age . Crosses on Kings probably repaired/restored? Baizes good. Two pawn baizes slightly brighter green colour- a minute difference, but presumably replaced baizes. Pawns look identical to the rest of the set.

Boxwood Side:

Attractive shiny patina. Chip to edge of knight ear (photo attached), a bit of surface dirt/dust, a few natural flaws to the wood, neat repair to one bishop finial, baizes good.

Ebony Side:

Minor hairline cracks to to queen, knight, rook, bishops, pawns.

Box:

Good. Original antique box to set. Nicely detailed late 19th century metal handles. Usual age scuffs and nicks. Green baize lining good.

Boxwood Side:

Nice honeyed toffee colour and polish. Two chips to top of Queen crown. Some surface dirt and natural flaws to the wood.

Ebony Side:

Hairline crack to Queen, and very faint hairline crack to black rook. Hairline crack to black pawn and knight.

Box:

Green label 'Very Good', with a few scuffs and a bit of surface dirt. A few age scuffs and marks. Dovetail join slightly loose to the front left.

Chess Set:

Good. Some natural flaws to the bone, red stain nice and even. One white pawn with chip to the underside of the base.

Board/Box

Good. Some age scuffs, especially around the hinge area.

Good. Nice toffee colour. 

Ebony Side:

Red crowns slightly rubbed, tiny chip to base edge of black bishop, repair to bishop finials and knights ears (near invisible), 

Box:

Wear and some loss to Green Label (plus owner's signature in ink). Hairline crack across top, some wear to green baize lining, no key.

Boxwood Side:

Nicely waxed patina, natural flaw to bishop (with a very slight lean), a few further natural flaws to the wood, green baizes good, but one or two a bit ragged around the edges. Variation to the carving style to the two knight horses, although the original green baize indicate that these were most likely to be original to the set.

Ebony Side:

'Excellent'.

Box:

Green label a bit grubby, with scuffs and scratches, but intact, without loss. Box good, with a few scuffs and minor dents.

Red Side:

Some very tiny chipping to turning.

White Side:

Flaw or possible chip to white king stem, minor hairline crack. Minor chipping to base edges, bone slightly yellowed.

Box:

Box with Millikin & Lawley (165 Strand) label. Label rubbed with some loss to the paper.

'Very Good', 'unused' condition. A small indentation to the top  and very slight puckering to the left edge. Plus a very minor (1.5cm) crease to the bottom. Faint creases to the reverse, not visible from the front. Otherwise 'Near Fine'.

Good. Slight surface dirt on the boxwood side, flaw to white king top, and further small natural flaw to base of one white knight, neat repair to collar of one white pawn. Box: 'Very Good".

Good. Elaborate bone inlay. Crack to the bottom of one of the trays. Tiles excellent with very little rubbing.  Paper instruction pamphlet stained to the front. A nice example of a 1920s Shanghai Export mahjong set.
