A Biedermeier "Selenus Pattern" Bone Chess Set & Wooden Board, German, circa 1840
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens with scalloped galleries, bishops with ball finials, knights as arched horse's heads, rooks as cylindrical turrets, pawns with baluster finials, with the original wooden box (with sliding lid and divides), and a hinged boxwood inlaid board/box for chess and backgammon or tric-trac

Typical player's set in bone- from the Biedermeier period, the period directly following the Napoleonic Wars. The 'Selenus Pattern' was the popular pattern for Central Europe.
