one side stained brown, the other side left natural, kings with triple pierced galleries and surmounted with crosses, queens similar but with two galleries, bishops with ‘thistle’ knops, knights as arched horses’ heads, rooks as raised open towers with crescent moon finials, pawns with cogged knops
