one side stained black (with highlights left natural), the other side natural, kings with multiple knops and reeded finials, queen similar but of smaller size, bishops with baluster knops, knights as large horse's heads over baluster knopped columns, rooks as turrets with tapering spires and finials in alternate colour, in a lidded box with key

Black highlighted horse's heads on the knights possibly re-stained? Hairline age crack on base of king, a few bases possibly period replacements, chip to pawn.
Rubbing to base of black rook, otherwise good.

Unusual Danish bone chess set from the late 18th/early 19th century. From a private British chess collection, previously in the collection of Martine Jeannin, the Parisian antique dealer (Bonhams, Fine Chess Sets and Games including the Martine Jeannin Collection, 29th April, 2009).
