An Anglo-Indian Export Ivory Chess Set, Berhampore, circa 1840
one side stained red, the other side left natural, carved with elaborate decoration, kings with domed tops and 'pineapple' finials, queens similar but of smaller size, bishops with mitre tops, knights as horses' heads, rooks as raised turrets with brickwork, pawns with baluster knops to the central sections and 'pineapple' finials. in a 20th century wooden box with lid and metal scallop clasp

Some hairline age cracks and yellowing, crack to base of bishop, chips to white king, chip to rook, chips to two pawns

Typical Anglo-Indian ivory chess set from the first half of the 19th century. These were made in Berhampore, a trading station of the British East India Company, specifically for the export market.
