Important Notice on the Export of Antique Elephant Ivory (CITES)

Please note that as the chess set contains antique elephant ivory dating from before 3rd March 1947, it will require a CITES export licence to export to destinations outside the European Union. Due to recent US legislation, it is with regret that we are unable to export this item to the United States of America. Please contact me if you need further information.

Condition

Rubbing and wear to outer presentation case, handle loose.

Board/box generally good, but some rubbing and puckering to the silver chess squares.

Ivory chess set immaculate. Suspect it has never been used. The owner tells me that his father, Major Smith (the original purchaser of the set) added the baizes to the undersides at a later date.

Please feel free to email me if you need further photographs. Thank you.

A Note From Luke

Japanese figural chess sets tend to be much rarer than their Chinese equivalents- I suspect because fewer examples were made. This is an especially interesting set of the type- as it comes with a reputable provenance: we can date its manufacture between 1930 and 39. The original purchaser of the set was a British army officer stationed in the British concession in Tientsin, China.

Takeda Bros. were Japanese importers  'curiousities' and luxury goods, based in Tientsin. The firm was founded in 1916, and became Takeda 'Brothers & Co.' in 1924.
