green baizes to the undersides, both kings stamped: JAQUES LONDON in red, in a mahogany box, with plum coloured baize lining, a sliding lid and green label: THE Staunton Chessmen...(Howard Staunton’s facsimile signature)... J. JAQUES & SON, LTD., LONDON, ENGLAND.
King: 9cm (3 1/2 inches) high
Pawn: 5cm high
Box: 16.5cm long, 13.2cm wide, 9.6cm high.
Stock Reference: MJ 1954
Reference Sir Alan Fersht, Jaques and British Chess Company Chess Sets, page 10, for a similar green label, dated '1902' in ink.
Nicely waxed patina, natural flaw to bishop (with a very slight lean), a few further natural flaws to the wood, green baizes good, but one or two a bit ragged around the edges.
Green label a bit grubby, with scuffs and scratches, but intact, without loss. Box good, with a few scuffs and minor dents.
A Note From Luke
Nice example of a turn-of-the century unweighted Jaques in the original box. Label is a bit scuffed, but set's in a good shape, with no chips or cracks.
