A Travelling Ship’s Chess & Backgammon Set by Henry Whitty of Liverpool, Late 19th century
the mahogany brass-hinged board/box for chess and backgammon, the exterior for chess, alternate squares in satin-birch and mahogany, with a pegged boxwood and ebonised Staunton chess set, the king 8.6cm high, the pawn 4.8cm high, the reverse for backgammon with pegged turned counters in boxwood and ebony, with retailer's transfer label: Henry Whitty & Son, Basnett Street, Liverpool, together with a book/box in tooled leather (the interior lined in pink moire silk) to hold the chess and backgammon pieces.

Reference: Henry Whitty became a fishing tackle maker and worked out of Edmundson’s Angling Depot located at 15 Basnett Street, Liverpool, a business established in 1815. In 1887 he published a book, "The Fly Makers Handbook”. By 1894 he had taken the business over and is described as a fishing net and fishing tackle maker and agent for the best makers of sports equipment and games, with business premises at 15 Basnett Street, 7 Queen Avenue and 13 Castle Street, Liverpool.
