A Burmese Carved Wooden Figural Chess Set, 18th Century
one side stained black, the other side yellow, kings and queens as seated figures, bishops as elephants, knights as horsemen, rooks as temples, pawns seated figures
King: approx 7.8cm high
Pawn: 6cm high

Considerable age showing in the patination. Traces of red showing through the black paint. One elephant bishop and seated queen presumably period replacements.
Considerable age, worn patination. Some variation in the pawns.

A Note From Luke
These antique wooden sets were used in the streets of Burma and typically show considerable wear through constant play. Kings and queens are figures in the Lotus postition, pawns are probably kneeling or seated monkeys.
