English Ornamental Chess Set, 19th century
An English turned ivory ‘ornamental’ chess set, early/mid 19th century
one side stained red, the other side left natural, of good quality, kings with elaborate turned crowns and surmounted with Maltese crosses, queens similar but with foliate knops, bishops with bulbous mitre tops, knights as carved horses’ heads with manes and flared nostrils, rooks as stepped turrets with large flags, pawns with reeded ball finials, the king 10cm high, the pawn 5cm high, in the original 19th century mahogany box witth a hinged lid and inlaid ebony escutcheon, 22.5cm wide.
