A Fine Canton or Macao Export “Burmese Pattern” Ivory Chess set of Large Size, Early/Mid 19th century
one side stained red, the other side left natural, the chessmen with elaborately carved and ornamental decoration, kings with carved human faces and surmounted with spire finials, flowers, birds and fleur-de-lys, queens similar, but of smaller size, bishops as mitres with cleric’s faces and surmounted with crosses, knights as horse’s heads, rooks as turrets with flags, the white rook bearing the Union Flag
