An Unusual “Muslim” or “Islamic” Pattern Bone and “ Indian Silver” mounted Chess Set, Northern India, 19th century
one side with dark red/brown highlights, the other side with green highlights, with Indian silver decorative foliate mounts, kings with Indian silver mounts and surmounted with monarch’s heads, (red king inscribed “Thakur Singh Shri Daulat Sinhaji” (name of ruler), “Thikana Daulat Garh” (district near Bundi), dated “Samvat 1884"), queens (or viziers) similar but of smaller size, pawns of ‘pepperpot’ form with gadrooned Indian silver mounts, the set sold with a red, green and violet cloth ‘board’ decorated with silvered thread borders

A Note From Luke
Unusual 19th century set from Northern India. Combines the Islamic tradition of abstract pieces with figural finials on the King and Queen. The Red King is inscribed: “Thakur Singh Shri Daulat Sinhaji” (name of ruler), “Thikana Daulat Garh” (district near Bundi), and dated “Samvat 1884”.
The set comes with a colourful cloth board embrodiered with silk thread.
