A Note From Luke

Genuinely rare cast-metal antique chess set from Dresden. Very similar indeed to the chess set illustrated in Schach Partie Durch Zeiten und Welten, page 127, and attributed to Johann Gotfried Jahn II. Bishops are depicted as running footmen bearing flaming torches. In the 18th century these men were chosen to run alongside aristocrat’s carriages. Two pieces have been restored to an impeccable standard.

The set comes with an interesting and attractive 18th century German hinged board/box. Chess and Nine Men Morris to the exterior, and tric-trac to the interior.
