Morocco Leather Sarcophagus Box, circa 1815
A Regency Red Morocco Leather Sarcophagus Box
with gilt brass mounts, tooled decoration to the leather, and raised on four lion-paw feet, the interior with faded pea-green velvet lidded case and lift-out tray lined in the original light blue coloured paper and pink leather
Stock Reference: PF 1687
Good, original, untampered condition. Red leather faded to a reddish brown. Slight rubbing and scuffing to the corners, and especially to the bottom front and back corner. Inside, the original velveteen purse or wallet has faded to a pea-green. Original lift-out card tray has some wear to edges and corners, as has the paper lining inside the box. Original owner’s (ie 19th century) pencil annotation underneath.
A Note From Luke
Lovely Regency Moroccan Leather box of good quality. Would originally have been used for sewing, but would also make a stylish desk box.
The sarcophagus shape is clearly influenced by Ancient Greek designs fashionable during the early 19th century.
