one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings surmounted with Maltese crosses, queens with feather finials, bishops with open mitres, knights as horses' heads, rooks as reeded turrets, pawns with reeded ball finials, white king signed (but rubbed) to the base: WILLIAM LUND...MAKER...FLEET STREET in a mahogany box with a sliding lid
