one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens with carved ‘barleycorn’ friezes to the centre, bishops as mitres with bobble decoration to the sides, knights as horses’ heads, rooks as turrets with brickwork and flags, pawns with reeded ball finials, in a chip carved wooden box with a hinged lid

King: 13.1cm high

Pawn: 4.6cm high

Box: 22.1cm wide

Stock Reference: MJ 1729

Please note: Illustrated with an English “History of England” Leather Games Board, circa 1900, which is being sold separately. Please click here to see it

Condition

There are some very minor hairline age cracks on the white rooks and a hairline age crack around the ball finial of a red rook. There's some slight age rubbing on the red stain, but otherwise a really nice, solid example, of large size, and comes with my recommendation.
