A Biedermeier "Coffee House" boxwood chess set, Germany or Austria, 19th century
one side stained dark brown or black, the other side left natural, bishops and rooks with finials in the alternate colour, kings and queens with baluster knops and domed finials, bishops with slanting caps, knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets with ball finials, the king 7cm (2 ¾ inches) high, the pawn 3.1 cm (1 ½ inches) high, in a mahogany and metal inlaid box, 21cm wide.
