An Antique Cantonese Ivory Figural Chess Set, circa 1820
one side stained green, the other side left natural, kings as the Emperor Ch’ien Lung, queens as Consorts, bishops as Mandarins, knights as horsemen with spears, rooks as elephants bearing flags, pawns as footsoldiers or coolies holding spears and swords, the chessmen raised on foliate decorated hexagonal bases, in an associated 1930's presentation casket, incorporating a velveteen lined tray, sold with a typed letter from the chess dealer, Mackett Beeson and an annontated facsimile of the original Mackett Beeson resumé
