"Charlemagne" Pearwood Part Chess Set
A South German carved pearwood part-chess set, 19th century
one side in a slightly darker-coloured wood, the other side in a slightly "lighter-coloured" wood, kings wearing crowns and with swords, queens in Medieval dress and wearing crowns, bishops wearing caps and holding spears, knights as rearing horse, rooks as pierced turrets, pawns wearing tri-corn hats and holding staffs, the king 12cm (4 ½ inches) high, the pawn 8cm (3 ¼ inches) high, one "darker coloured" pawn and one "lighter coloured" bishop missing (30 pieces in all).
