A German Biedermeier chess set, early 19th century
one side in polished boxwood, the other side in a darker polished wood, kings with double urn galleries, queens with single urn gallery, bishops with caps in the alternate colour, knights as arched horses' heads, rooks as tapering turrets with brickwork and ball finials in the alternate colour, pawns with urns, the king 10.1cm high, the pawn 6.4cm high, together with a 19th century German ivory and ebony inlaid wooden hinged chess board/box, with a brass clasp and plate, 44cm wide (when open).
