A German "Selenus" polished bone chess set, circa 1830, one side in a natural bone, the other side with a shiny chocolate patina, kings and queens with floral balustrades, bishops with ball finials, knights with horses' heads, rooks as slender turrets, pawns with baluster stems and surmounted with ball finials, the king 10cm (4 inches) high, the pawn 4.5cm (1 ¾ inches) high, sold with a 19th century mahogany box or caddy, 26cm wide.
