A Jaques "Golf Prize" Chess Set, 1907
A Weighted Boxwood and Ebony Staunton Chess Set by Jaques
the king 4 1/2 inches high, the pawn 2 1/2 inches high, both kings stamped Jaques London, in a mahogany box, with a green label (J. Jaques & Son Ltd., London, England), and a polished brass presentation plate inscribed: "Burnham Beeches G.C. Foursome Competition 1907. Dr. R.E.B and D.A.T. Wilmot", the box with inset 'campaign' brass carrying handles, the box 23.5cm wide, together with the original key.
Note: A magnificent example of a large and weighted 41/2 inch Jaques presentation chess set. The historic Burnham Beeches Golf Club was founded in 1891. Burnham Beeches is a famous beauty spot located to the west of London, in the county of Buckinghamshire. The brass carrying handles on the side of the set are unusual and were probably a special commission.
