Fine Rajasthan figural chess set, circa 1840
An Indian Export painted and lacquered ivory figural chess set, Rajasthan, circa 1840
one side predominantly red, the other side predominantly cream, both with gilt highlights, kings as elephants with prices riding in howdahs (the elephant trunks wrapped around tigers), queens similar but of smaller size, bishops as camels with drums, knights as horsemen with spears, rooks as elephants with rockets (white rooks bearing the Union Flag), pawns as footsoldiers and musicians, with flags, flutes and drums, the king 16.5cm high, the pawn 9.5cm high, in a modern presentation case in red 'leatherette', 53.5cm x 18cm x 41.5cm.
