A German bone "Selenus" pattern chess set, 18th century
one side stained a very dark brown, the other side left natural, kings of elegant slender shape with double pierced galleries, queens with single galleries, bishops with large ball finials, knights as horses' heads (with eyes and mouth), rooks as slender turrets with long knopped finials, pawns with baluster knops, the king 12.5cm high, the pawn 4.2cm high, in the original pine fitted display box, with a sliding lid, 29cm wide, 20cm high, 6.5cm deep.
