An Indian Export ivory chess set, Delhi, circa 1840
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with pierced tops and foliate spray finials, queens similar but of a smaller size, bishops as carved mitres, knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets with flags, pawns with tear-drop finials, all the chessmen with circular gadrooned bases, the king 10.8cm high, the pawn 5.5cm high, in a red leatherette presentation attache case, with red felt lining and two lift-out trays, 42cm wide.
