A South German carved pearwood figural chess set, Bavaria, circa 1930
one side stained dark brown, the other side the chessmen individually carved in folk dress, knights as rearing horse, rooks as shooting platforms or look-outs, pawns as rural workers, each piece with the number 5 carved on the underside of the bases, the king 12.7cm high, the pawn 8cm high, with an accompanying mahogany chess board with a decorative carved oak border, 51cm wide.
