one side stained a light brown, the other side polished, kings with cogged knops and crowns, queens similar but of smaller size, bishops with domed knops, knights as horses’ heads with ‘eyes’, rooks as raised turrets, pawns with slender columns, the king 7cm high, the pawn 3.4cm high, in an ‘ivorine’, ’faux tortoiseshell’ and wooden board box, circa 1950, the interior compartments lined with velveteen, 23.5cm wide.
