A Staunton weighted boxwood and ebony chess set No. 1 S (“Superior”) by the British Chess Company, late 19th century, knights cast from “Xylonite", red crown on the black knight base, red crown on the black rook top, chessmen with pea-green baizes to the undersides, the king 4.3 inches (11.2cm high), the pawn 2.3” inches (5.7cm high), in a rosewood box lined in pea-green felt, the white paper label: “The Staunton Chessmen...No. 1S (handwritten in ink) ... manufactured by The British Chess Company...Stroud....(Glos.).
