A rare J. Jaques Staunton unweighted boxwood and ebony chess set, 1850
the white king stamped J. JAQUES LONDON in black on the rim of the base, light green felt to the bases, the king 3 ½ inches high (8.9 cm high), the pawn 4.5 cm high, (cross missing on white king, chip to white pawn collar, chip to black king cross finial, finial missing off black bishop), in a mahogany wooden box with a hinged lid and green label: THE STAUNTON CHESS-MEN...Entered No. 597 (handwritten in black ink) and Howard Staunton’s signature (in black ink), 17.5cm wide, 9.1cm high (when lid closed), 13cm deep.
