Edinburgh Upright Chess Set, 19th Century
An ‘Edinburgh Upright’ Boxwood & Ebony Chess Set, mid to late 19th Century
kings with elegant urn-shaped tops and spiked finials, queens surmounted with ball finials and spikes, bishops as split mitres, knights as raised horse’s heads, rooks as turrets, pawns with baluster knops and ball finials, in a green baize lined wooden box (probably of a later date) with a sliding lid.
King: 10.2cm high
Pawn: 5.1cm high
Box: 19.7cm x 12cm x 9.4cm

Condition
Boxwood Side:
Faint hairline crack to top of King, natural flaw to centre of King stem, and resulting slight lean, faint hairline crack to lower section of Queen. Nice patination to the boxwood.
Ebony Side:
Restoration to Queen spike, tiny chip to baluster rim of bishop and rook.
Box:
‘Very Good’. With a sliding lid. Probably of a later date than the chess set.
A Note From Luke
The “Edinburgh” or “Northern” Upright pattern is always popular with collectors and players. According to Howard Staunton the pattern was designed by Lord John Hay in the 1840s.
