English “Staunton Pattern” Boxwood & Ebony Chess Set, circa 1890

weighted, with red felt baizes to the underside of the bases in a wooden box with a sldiing lid, good toffee colour to the boxwood

King: 8.6cm high

Pawn: 4.1cm high

Condition

Boxwood Side:

Good toffee colour. Some moth holes to the red baizes. Otherwise ‘Excellent”.

Ebony Side:

A few moth holes to the red baizes. Very minor chafing to edges of bishop. Otherwise ‘Excellent’. 

Box:

Good. The usual minor scuffs. 

 

A Note From Luke

It’s been suggested that this Staunton set is by the Victorian Liverpool chess manufacturer, Richard Whitty. Certainly, the red baizes are of the same colour. Otherwise, it’s a decent player’s antique set, with a good weight.
