An English “Washington Pattern” bone chess set, circa 1800
one side stained black (probably re-stained at some point), the other side left natural, kings with multi-baluster knops and crowns, queens with ball finials, bishops as cleft mitres, knights as arched horses’ heads, rooks as monbloc turrets with battlements, pawns with ball finials, the king 8.6cm high, the pawn 4cm high.
