A Good English Boxwood & Ebony Staunton Chess Set in the style of F. H. Ayres, Early 20th Century

the chessmen with green baizes to the underside, in a mahogany box with a hinged lid and brass clasp

F. H. Ayres was a Victorian games and toy manufacturer ('Ayres' founded 1810, F. H. Ayres 1864), especially known for the quality of their rocking horses. They also manufactured Staunton chess sets in the style of Jaques. Unlike Jaques, Ayres sets are unsigned, although the distinctive knight on this set would indicate that it was most probably made by F. H. Ayres.
