A Fine Makruk (or Makrook) Ivory Chess Set & Wooden Board, Cambodia, 18th Century

one side with a light brown stain, kings with baluster tops, queens of small size, bishops similar to kings but of smaller size, knights as arched horses’ heads with carved manes, rooks of spread flat form, small sea-shells used for pawns, together with an accompanying Cambodian hardwood board with scalloped edges to each end (2) 

King: 5cm high

Queen: 1.9cm high

Knight: 5cm high

Pawn: 2.4cm wide

Board: 51.5cm long, 35.5cm wide

Reference: Very similar to the 18th century Cambodian set illustrated in Hans & Siegfried Wichmann’s Chess- The Story of Chesspieces from Antiquity to Modern Times, 1960
