A Fine Macao Export Ivory Chess Set, circa 1810
Chinese versus Europeans (stained red and left natural), with elaborate carved floral and foliate decoration, red kings and queens as Emperor and Empress, both with headdresses, red bishops as mandarins, knights as horses heads, rooks as raised turrets of square section with flags, pawns with heads wearing Chinese caps, the white king as King George III, queen as Charlotte, both with crowns, white bishops as Christian clerics, knights as horses’ heads, rooks as raised turrets of square section with Union Flags, pawns as heads wearing caps
